For an automatic transmission, check the side of the transmission by or at where the shifter linkage goes into the trans. For a manual transmission, check under the shifter boot.
Did you check the light bulbs? If OK, probably a bad reverse light switch in tranny.

Begin by removing the retaining ring at the top of your 1992 Chevy ignition switch. The ignition switch will slide out. Remove the wiring harness from the end of the ignition switch. Reverse the process to install the new ignition switch.

maybe your transmission is going out or you dont have sufficent transmission fluid.

Fuse panel on the drivers kick panel, but your other lights would be out too. What you more likely have there is a reverse/neutral safety switch problem, when out of adjustment the lights will not come on.
Normally this is an indication of a defective brake light switch.

You'll find it after you remove the air filter assembly on top of the trans axle housing. There are only two electrical connectors there. One is the backup light switch the other is a thick ground wire. You'll be able to tell the difference easily. The ground wire is thicker.
