As it was explained to me, this is one of those questions that has no direct answer, since there is no place in The Bible where it states "God could not look upon the sin of Jesus". First if all, it was the sin of mankind, not of Jesus; He was totally without sin, but He took the sin of the world upon himself. When Jesus cried out, "My God, My God, why have You forsaken me"?, He was feeling Himself separated from God for the first time ever. Not because God had truly deserted Him, but because God could not look upon the sin with which Jesus was now covered because He had taken the sins of the world upon Himself. So God had to turn away.

Answer:

The above answer is an excellent one. The scriptural quote by Jesus: "My God, My God, why hast thou forsaken Me," is actually an inspired passage from Psalms - Ps.22:1.

"My God, My God, why hast thou forsaken me? Why art thou so far from helping me, and from the words of my roaring?...I am a worm, and no man; a reproach of men, and despised of the people. All they that see me laugh me to scorn: they shoot out the lip, they shake the head, saying, He trusted on the Lord that He would delilver Him: let Him deliver Him, seeing He delighted in Him..." (verses 1-8).

Psalm 22 turns into a description of the crucifixion of Christ... a description of what He would experience on the tree.

"...I am poured out like water, and all My bones are out of joint: My heart is like wax; it is melted in the midst of My bowels... My strength is dried up... My tongue cleaveth to My jaws; and thou hast brought Me into the dust of death. For dogs have compassed Me: the assembly of the wicked have inclosed Me: they pierced My hands and My feet. I may tell all My bones: they look and stare upon Me. They part My garments among them, and cast lots upon My vesture. Be not thou far from Me, O Lord: O My Strength, haste thee to help Me... (verses 14-19).

It's impossible to believe, at this time of Jesus' incredible agony, that He would think that now was the right time to merely "quote scripture" just to "fulfill the prophecy".

But that by this time, His moment of death, He was at His strongest spiritual connection with His Father... desperately needing that connection to endure it. And that, indeed, His Father truly did look away from His Son as all the vile sins of the world was in that instant of death borne by Him. It is entirely possible that Jesus "didn't know this was going to happen"... and that He was caught totally off guard... and in that instant before His death, He was abandoned by the Father to do exactly what He was there to do:

"God (the Father)... hath in these last days spoken unto us by His Son, whom He hath appointed Heir of all things (the universe), by Whom also He made the worlds; who being the Brightness of His glory, and the express image of His Person, and upholding all things by the Word of His Power, when He had BY HIMSELF PURGED OUR SINS, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on High; being made so much better than the angels, as He hath by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they." (Heb.1:1-4)
