Based on a response that I saw on another blog - SN's were not required until 1968. The Stevens 77D was manufactured from 1940 to 1960 and therefore may not have one.

no i think it was made by savage arms
Savage arms and j. Stevens
The Stevens Savage Model 124 12 gauge shotgun was made from 1949 to 1954. The serial number will signify the actual year of manufacture.
If it has both the Stevens and Savage names it was made sometime after the mid 1940's. If it has no serial number, it was made before 1969.
with a serial number of E261611
They were made for a long time. If it has a serial number, it is post-1968.
you may find some info at the savage arms website. This was the maker of your shotgun,savage/stevens.
As they were manufactured prior to 1968, serial numbers were not required by law, optional. In your case, it is likely that the shotgun never had a serial number.
May not have one- not required by law on rifles and shotguns until 1968.
Most likely isn't one these shotguns were over 50 years old and were made before there was a requirement for background checks/ serial numbers.
These shotguns were made by savage/stevens between the years 1986-1989.There was no accurate records kept of the serial numbers as to year of production.
