Try the receiver and/or barrel
Prior to the 1968 Gun Control Act, long guns were not required to be serial numbered so depending on it's age, your gun may not have a number. On earlier ones you might find a letter stamp date code on the bottom of the shotgun barrel near the forend latch stud or inside the frame in the area normally covered when the barrels are latched closed.
