No, solenoids are located on the starters these days.
The shift solenoids are located on the valve body. you can get to it by removing the side cover on the transmission. The side cover is hard to remove. You have to lower the craddle down far enough to get it out. This can be diffucult without it being on a lift but it can be done.
Combination of engine and transmission sensor are fed to the computer and it then actuates solenoids in the trans to make the shift.
