Oil Formation takes about 4 to 5 million years. Its place of formation is much different to the place where oil reserves are found. The place where oil is formed is under very high pressure and different types of forces apart from pressure act on it (gravitational force, pressure gradients etc). This causes the oil to migrate through porous rocks. This migration continues till this oil is trapped by an impermeable and non porous hard rock cap. The oil then settles there in the form of a pool with water in the lowest layer topped by oil and on top lies the gas. This is the reservoir from where we can extract out oil.
