The gauge temperature sensor is on the driver side rear of the cylinder head.
Above, it is behind the valve cover.

Check your fuse, and your coolant temp sensor. The coolant temp sensor is more than likely the problem
Yes it has one.
It will bolt in, but the intake on the 1996 is different and the cylinder head on the 1996 does not have the temp sensor for the gauge in the same location.

On my 1999 Jeep Wrangler the batt. temp sensor is underneath the battery and mounted to the batt. base plate through a hole in the plate.
The 1999 4.7 liter engine temperature sensor is located just above the thermostat housing. The sensor will be on the front of the engine.
The engine temp sensor on a Subaru 2.5 liter is located on top of the engine near the radiator output. It constantly monitors the coolant temperature and helps to vehicle adjust flow as needed.
Unplug and reconect the coolant temp sensor.
The coolant temp sensor is located next the the thermostat housing.
