no transmission dipstick! gm thought thy came up with a great idea, but all it is is c--p.heres how it is supposed to be checked. jack up car get it as level as possible, start car, let run for 3-5 mins. put foot on brake and go thru the gears slowly p r n d 3 2 1, after car has run 3-5 mins, get under car and remove plug for transmission.(on the 3.1 it is in back of pan on tranny). while car is running, take out plug. do not take out plug when car is off , or you will loose your fluid. check it with engine running! if fluid just comes out of hole, it is ok! if fluid pours out its to full has to be at bottom of plug hole. be careful the fluid will be very hot. put a catch pan under to catch fluid. to add or fill as engine is running, add fluid until it just strarts to come out plug, it should be at bottom of plug hole. when done adding fluid replace plug in tranny then let car down. on 3.1 fluid fill is on drivers side on top of tranny, the cap is red, under exhaust manifold. if just changing filter and gasket, it will take approx. 7.4 quarts. but beware the replacement tranny gasket should have steel inserts in bolt holes, the plain neopream gaskets in package, crushes under pressure 9 ft lbs. on pan, i know i just warped my tranny pan by using the gasket that was in the filter kit. gm makes junk!!!! ------------ add fluid with car running.

If it is an automatic, the fluid should be at operating temperature. The transmission in park and the engine at idle. Remove the dipstick and wipe it dry and check the level. Do not overfill.
There is a diPstick at the front on the transmission differential
the thermostat is in the coolant cap
