Genesis 1:1

In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.

Genesis 1:2

And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.

Genesis 1:3

And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.

The apostle John in his gospel tells us:

John 1:1

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

John 1:2

The same was in the beginning with God.

John 1:3

All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.

Genesis presents to us God and the Spirit of God.

John presents to us the Word (Jesus) as the one thru whom ALL things were created.

So we have God the Father, God the Son (Jesus the Word) and the God the Spirit.

How are the first few verses of John Chapter 1 similar to the first few verses of Genesis Chapter 1?

AnswerThe first few verses of John's Gospel are both like and unlike the first few verses of Genesis. We can be sure that the author of John knew Genesis chapter 1 quite well and sought to place the Logos (Word) in that context, although Genesis is clear that only God was present. The Logos, usually translated (although inadequately) as the Word, was a concept developed by the Greek philosophers to explain the creation of the world. It entered Christianity to become a synonym for Jesus, via Philo of Alexandria, although Philo was probably not really a Christian. The reference in John 1:5 to 'light' could be from a Gnostic concept of light as a divine substance, since some scholars think that John's Gospel might have been written in a Gnostic community before becoming more widely read.
