They are copied to the 'clip board'. This is just a software name, for a portion of the memory reserved for temporary storage.
It is volatile and will be lost when the computer is shut down.
You could answer that in different ways. Items can be copied from cells. They can be copied from a source. They can be copied to the clipboard and then from the clipboard to their destination. Not everything is in cells, so you can have items such as graphics or text boxes and many other things. So there are various answers.
