There is no drain plug. Unbolt the bottom pan of the tranny and pull the filter off.
You have to remove the oil pan to drain the fluid.

To drain the transmission you have to drop the transmission oil pan. Make sure to change the filter while you are in there. It is inexpensive and will prolong your transmission life.

The drain fill on a 1997 Dodge Avenger manual transmission is on the bottom of the transmission. It is located up from the drain plug.
Again, mine is a 2000. You gotta "drop" the pan from the bottom of the transmission. You may have to remove a plastic cover or two if it's stock. Oh, get a drip pan for your tranny fluid to go into. prepare to get real messy if it doesn't have a drain plug

you can change the fluid, but not the filter. drain the fluid from the drain plug on the bottom of the transmission and refill from the dipstick. the filter is only accessable by overhauling the transmission
