Owls live in various habitats, depending on their species, but I could say that the most common place for an owl to make a nest, is in a hollow in a fir or pine tree.
The owls that live in Illinois are: eastern screetch owl, barred owl, great horned owl, lone-eared owl, snowy owl, northern hawk owl, and short-eared owl.

Barn owls tend to live closer in fields. They eat mice so they stay closer to fields and cities. However, if the city is in a desert area, the owl can survive. I live in Tucson and we have pleanty of barn owls. They just stay closer to the city than going out in the desert.
Screech Owls, Great Horned Owls, Barred Owls mainly.
