Away from me
A siren is sounded to warn of an air attack.
it sounded like a chain saw on steroids.

Yes. It sounded pretty much like the ones used in the UK and US. I remember hearing the siren while living in Germany where they were tested in once a month up until the 90s.
The fraction seen was 440/800.
The air raid sirens sounded when approaching bombers were picked up on radar or were seen crossing the coast and heading for large cities. The sirens warned people to head for air raid shelters or to take cover in their own homes. When the danger was over, the sirens sounded again with a different tone to signify 'all clear'.
Shelley Beattie went by Siren.
Before an air raid began two warnings were sounded - amber (yellow), then red alert. When it was safe to leave air raid shelters and walk about an 'all clear' signal was sounded. They were alerted by the sound of the sirens, which are used nowadays as signals to tell factory-workers that their shift is finished.
they went into there bomb shelter
i would.. stay indoors because, people get killed more by debris other than direct impact

People were warned of a likely air raid by loud sirens, positioned in different parts of towns and cities. During the blitz, they became an almost daily part of life. The sirens made a very loud and long signal or warning sound. For an alert, the siren sound pitch rose and fell alternately. The All Clear was a continuous sound from the siren. Not every alert brought a raid, and sometimes raids happened when no alert had sounded. When people heard the siren they would stop what they were doing and make for a shelter usually located in the back yard or in a basement.
