If you look at the sight glass (on the engine right behind the bend of the front exhaust pipe), you should see oil in it. It should be about half way in between the upper and lower marks on the ring around the glass. You need to have the bike vertical (not on the kickstand) when you look at this. 1700ml is stamped on the engine right next to the oil fill hole as the proper amount. This is also what the manual says is correct. This equates to just under 2 quarts. However, I have found that when doing an oil change, it actually takes about 2.25 quarts to get the level right. I don't think the 1700ml recommendation accounts for changing the filter.
