In late 1965 an ad was run in Los Angeles looking for young men to possibly be in a television series. The Monkees were created from the men who auditioned from this ad. The first television episode and the first records of the Monkees were issued in September 1966.

Yes they were. They even had there own TV show!!!!! In 1966 and 1967, the Monkees held down the #1 album spot for nearly a half year. Their initial album, the Monkees was replaced at #1 by More of the Monkees. When it fell out of first, one week later the Monkees' third album, Headquarters, spent one week at #1 and was knocked out by The Beatles Sgt. Pepper. A "fun fact" is that the Monkees sold more records in 1967 than the Beatles and the Rolling Stones combined. However the Beatles and the Stones only released one album that year while the Monkees had four.
