Where to look for a hamster?

I'd simply advise anywhere BUT a pet shop. Pet shops usually get genders of hamsters wrong, and in my case and many others even got the TYPE of hamster wrong! Go to your local rescue, as thanks to petshops, there are a lot of unwanted hamster babies that get dumped on their doorstep through no fault of their own. I am sure they would love a home and are usually already very tame.

The alternative is a breeders, where you will have a large range of colours and types of hamster, although some breeders do not keep their hamsters in the best of care, so make sure the living conditions are good before purchase.

I would recommend a Syrian for a first-time hamster keeper. Remember they can live ONLY alone, as when sexually mature will kill any other hamsters. They are solitary

And *please* research the kind of hamster you get first, as not doing so leads to incorrect care of the hamster and sometimes even hamster babies.
