Why won't a new Zippo lighter work?

Doing this means you risk setting the excess fluid on fire and badly hurting yourself if there is any on the case of the lighter or your hands. Zippo strongly recommend that you wash your hands thoroughly, and wipe your zippo before you ignite the lighter.
