The reef is quite far from shore and you have to take boats running at full speed for an hour and a half to just get there. But it is all great fun.
You have a choice between day trips and "liveaboard" several-day trips. They run out of Cairns and Port Douglas. Many day-trips out of Cairns involve being driven to Port Douglas first, so I just stayed in Port Douglas. It doesn't really matter which boat you take as they are all professionally run, but the smaller the boat the smaller the crowd swimming with you.
