Your vocal folds (also called the ventricular folds) are toward the top of your larynyx, protecting your vocal chords. These folds help prevent you from breathing in solids.

A very interesting effect is produced when you sing and you get these folds to vibrate. They will vibrate at half the speed of your vocal chords, and produce a sound an octave lower than the note you are singing with your vocal chords.
