On wikipedia it says that he went to Ralston Primary and Paisley Grammar School where he enjoyed a fruitful relationship with English teacher Moira Robertson, who was among the first to recognise his potential.

He then earned a bachelor's degree from the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama

So there! He went to a normal priamry and secondary school having a normal education in order to be well educated and then went on to concentrate his studies on drama
