Frederick Augustus Washington Bailey (he later took the name Frederick Douglass) was born into slavery in Talbot County, Maryland.
At an early age Frederickwas separated from his mother and lived with his maternal grandmother, Betty Bailey, in her slave shack that was located east of Tappers Corner and west of Tuckahoe Creek, near the town of Easton on the Eastern Shore of Maryland.
When he was about 6 or 7 years old, his grandmother took him to Wye House plantation, home of his master, Thomas Auld. When he was about eight Frederick was sent to live as a houseboy with Hugh and Sophia Auld, relatives of his master, in Baltimore, Maryland.
When Frederick was about 15 or 16, he was sent back to the Eastern Shore of Maryland where he was hired out to other plantation owners.
