Lincoln was watching the play "Our American Cousin", at Ford's Theatre, in the state box. The door to the state box had been closed but not locked. One of Lincoln's Bodyguards, John Parker, had the job of posting watch outside the state box. Parker left his post, and therefore, anyone could enter the state box since the door was unlocked.
At approximately 10:15 pm, Lincoln was sitting next to his wife, in a seat which faced directly opposite the door to the state box. Wilkes Booth came flying through the unlocked door, and fired one shot to the back of Lincoln's head, mortally injuring him. (President Lincoln died the following morning at approximately 7:30am).
