Samuel Morse was a professor of arts and design at New York University when he first demonstrated a crude working model of the telegraph in 1835. [See related links.]
Samuel Mores did not exactly invent, but came up with the idea and was later named after him for he used a early version for the telegraph which he did invent
The first telegraph message sent by Samuel Morse said "What Hath God Wrought". Annie Ellsworth came up with the words.

She was the daughter of a good friend of Samuel F.B Morse. She came up with the words for the first telegraph sent, "What Hath God Wrought".
Even though Samuel Morse invented his version of the electrical telegraph in 1837, another inventor came up with a slightly different one in 1832.If i remember correctly, the another guy did come up with a version of the electrical telegraph, but that it was too complicated and difficult to use, and when he was trying to sort these problems out, old Samuel Morse released his version.
They of course used the telegraph machine, but to make sure no one could understand, they switched it up... it wasn't exactly Morse code, but a code that they made up.
Up to the 1800's the only way that people could communicate with other people over long distances was to physically carry it: either by walking or by using horses, ships, etc. So news traveled very slowly. It was the discovery of electricity which gave Samuel Morse the idea of inventing the telegraph because he wanted to make long-distance communication faster.

They could send messages using it by telegraph and ships used it. If you know Morse code you don’t have to say anything, but can use lights to send the dots and dashes that make up Morse code.

the telegraph went through many stages before becoming known as the telephone.
