Originally Napoleon was buried in St Helena's Valley of the Willows in May 1821. In 1840 the French asked permission to transfer the remains of Napoleon in France. The British granted the permission and the remains were transfered on board the frigate Belle Poule and the steamship Normandie. The remains stayed in the cupola of St Jerome's Chapel until 1861 when the monument of Les Invalides was delivered and finaly the remains of Napoleon were entombed in a porfyry sarcophagus in the crypt of its dome.
