St. Norbert was born in 1080 at Xanten, Germany, to a noble family. Norbert led a worldly and carefree life during his youth. For reasons of family prestige, Norbert was named imperial chaplain. During a thunderstorm in 1115, he narrowly escaped death by lightning. This event changed his life. He took vows and conducted an upright and righteous life. Pope Gelasius authorized him and several companions to found a religious community at Premontre, France which became the religious order of the Premonstratensian Canons which was approved in 1126. That same year Norbert was elevated and consecrated Archbishop of Magdebur, Germany. Norbert did there in 1134 and was canonized in 1582 by Pope Gregory XIII.
In art, St. Norbert is depicted with the white robe of the Premonstratensians, usually holding a monstrance. Norbert is the protector of women in childbirth.
In German, Norbert means "Northern splendor" and is a form of Robert (Norman French) or Rupert (Saxon) which translate to "bright fame." Norbert's Memorial Day is 6 June.
