Scrabble was invented in Jackson Heights, New York (USA) by Alfred Mosher Butts, between 1931 and 1933. The rights were then sold to James Brunot in 1948 where it was made into the Scrabble that we see today. Brunot promised royalties to Butts for every copy sold.
According to history, the first scrabble was created by Alfred Mosher Butts in 1930s (the month and day was not recorded). But, the said game board was granted the copyrights on December 16, 1948 which falls on a Thursday.
The exact year is hard to pinpint because the inventor of Scrabble, Alfred Butts, created a game called Lexiko in the early 1930s. Lexiko didn't have a board, only letter tiles. Butts added a board in 1938, which included all of the special scoring, but gave up marketing this new game, called Criss-Cross, a few years later. It wasn't until 1947 that he developed the product further with James Brunot and the games name was changed to Scrabble. The new games hit store shelves in 1948.
