Although it was a triumphant success, shortening the war by months at almost nil casualties, Sherman was privately nervous at the start, and spent much effort in deception tactics to conceal his route from the few Confederates in his path.
It was also worrying for Lincoln, as the telegraph wires had been cut, and Sherman was incommunicado for five weeks.
At Savannah, Sherman was able to establish contact with the US Navy and send signals to Lincoln. As it was December, one of the first ones jokingly offered him the city of Savannah as a Christmas present.
