The brontosaurus is no longer a real dinosaur but.... why?

The brontosaurus is now called "apatosaurus". The first name given to it was apatosaurus (in 1877), but when bones were later found of the same species by another person, he called it brontosaurus (in 1879). The first name takes precedence.

Were where the first brachiosaurus bones found?

It is said that the Brontosaurus does not exist; paleontologist O.C. Marsh, who discovered the Brontosaurus in 1879 found a skeleton that did not have a head, so he used a skull that was found miles away to complete the skeleton. The skeleton O.C. Marsh had found was actually the skeleton of an Apatosaurus, which is a species he had already discovered and named two years earlier. So that being said, there was no longer any dinosaur named Brontosaurus.

The brontosausrus is known as?

Brontosaurus was named when fossil bones from 2 types of saraupod dinosaurs became mixed up. One was Apatosaurus and the other was Camarasaurus. It is generally assumed that most species of "Brontosaurus" found were in fact Apatosaurus.

What time did the brontosaurus live?

Brontosaurus wasn't an actual species. This was an error on the part of paleontologists at the time, who reconstructed this supposed species using the bones of more than one species. So, to answer you question, the brontosaurus didn't ever live.

What year was the brontosaurus found in?

Brontosaurus was discovered by Othniel Charles Marsh in 1879. Two years before, however, he discovered Apatosaurus ajax. It turns out that Brontosaurus belonged to the same genus as Apatosaurus ajax, so the name Brontosaurus isn't valid. Brontosaurus is now called Apatosaurus excelsus.

What is an interesting fact about brontosaurus?

Brontosaurus was discovered two years after Apatosaurus ajax. It was assigned to its own genus, but it was later found that Brontosaurus belonged to the same genus as Apatosaurus ajax. Thus, the name Brontosaurus is invalid, and now it is called Apatosaurus excelsus.

Why was the brontosaurus special?

A dinosaur named the Apatosaurus was discovered, documented, and named. Afterwards, another dinosaur was found, documented, and named the Brontosaurus. Years later, it was reaalized that the Brontosaurus was really an Apatosaurus, and it is not another genus.

Did the Brontosaurus once live in Utah?

Why was Brontosaurus the wrong name for Apatosaurus?

Because brontosaurus never was real they accidentally put a camarasaurus head on an aptosaurus. it was later found that they made a mistake!!!

Who named the brontosaurus?

Othniel Charles Marsh discovered one species of Apatosaurus, and named it Apatosaurus ajax. When he discovered Apatosaurus excelsus, though, he assigned it to its own genus, Brontosaurus. Later it was found that both Brontosaurus and Apatosaurus ajax belonged to the same genus, so Brontosaurus was reassigned to Apatosaurus excelsus.
