'The Castle of the Ortranto' is considered the first gothic novel. If this is taken as true then it would be England. However the novel is based on an Italian Opera that has foundations in a Sicilian noble family.

In all honesty 'gothic literature' has no definite beginning (only its classification) and elements of it can be found as far back as the Bronze Age. Consider 'Orpheus in the Underworld' pretty Gothic I think.
