It is difficult to say with any certainty which tornado in Texas was the most famous. Here are some candidates:

  • The Waco tornado of May 11, 1953 devastated much of downtown Waco, leveling large brick buildings and blowing away homes. It killed 114 people, tying it with the Goliad tornado of 1902 as the deadliest tornado in Texas history and the 11th deadliest in U.S. history. Years later, the tornado was assigned a rating of F5, the highest possible rating on the Fujita scale.
  • The Lubbock tornado of May 11, 1970. This F5 tornado tore through downtown Lubbock destroying many homes, damaging high-rise buildings, and killing 26 people. Dr. Tetusya Fujita conducted a detailed survey of this tornado's damage path, using it as a model on which to base the Fujita scale.
  • The Wichita Falls tornado of April 10, 1979. This massive F4 tornado, at times up to a mile and a half wide, devastated a large portion of Wichita Falls. It destroyed more than 3,000 homes, cost over $400 million, and killed 42 people. At the time it was the costliest tornado in U.S. history, even with adjustment for inflation. This was also the last US tornado to kill more than 40 people until 2011.
