it was discovered a while after cobalt was discovered by Georg Brandt,in 1739.

You can possibly get cancer, definitely if it's not protected gamma radiation
With any radiation you can get cancer. With chemo you can get cancer, but that is like 30+ years down the road. The immediate side effects would be a reddening of the skin, but that wont occur until a dose of over 4000cGy, and many patients dont experience that. Depending on where the radiation is being aimed the patient MAY (not for sure) experience diarrhea, nausea, muscle cramps, some nerve pain.
