the copper cylinder(cathode) and iron rod(anode)
Well, according to MythBusters in the 'Baghdad Battery' episode/myth, it was used for electric pain control, in conjunction with acupuncture.
A Baghdad battery consists of a ceramic pot, a copper cylinder, and an iron rod. When filled with an electrolyte such as vinegar or lemon juice, it generates a small electric current due to chemical reactions between the metals and the electrolyte. Though the exact purpose of these ancient batteries is still debated, they could potentially have been used for electroplating or medical purposes.
The first known electrical device was found in Baghdad, Afghanistan. It is a primitive battery thought to have been made between 225 B.C. and 224 A.D. There is somecontroversy on what it was actually used for though.
Some believe that the first voltage source in the world was the Baghdad battery. In some temples, potery has been found that contains the components to create an electrical charge in order to produce voltage.

Electricity occurs naturally in lightning and static, which must have caused wonderment for many years. It was known how to make batteries for many years, by pioneers such as Micheal Faraday, Voltair, Leclanche and Franklin. But no one knew what to use it for. There is even suspicion that a mysterious pot found in Baghdad, dating back thousands of years, could have been an early battery. known as the 'Baghdad battery'. Electricity was known about for centuries, but no one knew what it was, it's relationship with magnetism, or what to use it for, until the 1800's.
