The Fetterman Massacre, Fetterman Fight, or Battle of the Hundred Slain took place along the Bozeman Trail, about 10 miles north of Fort Phil Kearney, in the Peno Creek valley. The site was over the summit of the Lodge Trail Ridge and out of site of the fort. Fort Phil Kearney was located near present day Buffalo, Wyoming.

On December 21, 1866, William J. Fetterman and his troop of 80 men pursued a small band of Sioux into an ambush. Fetterman ignored orders not to venture beyond Lodge Trail Ridge, out of sight and support distance from Wyoming's Fort Phil Kearney. The troop found themselves facing approximately 2000 Indians and the troop was wiped out within 20 minutes. This encounter became known as the Fetterman Massacre.
