Phoenix was a robotic spacecraft to Mars [See Link]. The Phoenix landed on Mars May 25, 2008. It's purpose was to search for environments suitable for microbial life on Mars, and to research the history of water.

The projected landing area was an area 100 km by 20 km covering terrain which had been informally named "Green Valley"which contained the largest concentration of water ice outside of the poles.
