The city of Toledo in the same-named province of central Spain is the location of the School of Translators. The school's name translates into the original Spanish as Escuela de Traductores de Toledo ("School of Translators of Toledo"). The emphasis was upon translating philosophical and religious works from Arabic to Latin in the twelfth century under the leadership of Gascony-born Archbishop Raymond of Toledo and to revised Castilian in the thirteenth century under the leadership of King Alfonso X of Castile and Leon (November 23, 1221 - April 4, 1284).
