The Statue of Liberty was a gift to the United States from the people of France. It was not "needed" at the time, but today it is a symbol for freedom, liberty, and other ideals the United States represents.
The Statue of Liberty is located on Liberty Island in New York Harbor. Originally dedicated on October 28, 1886, it has remained in the same location since its installation. Today, it continues to serve as a symbol of freedom and democracy, attracting millions of visitors each year. The statue is part of the Statue of Liberty National Monument, managed by the National Park Service.
I think it may be that it is much more realistic to tourist then today.
The statue was located on Bedloe's Island, not Ellis Island. I don't know why it was located there unless it was because the tiny island was not good for much, it was owned by the Federal Government and available, and a part of a fort that was there could become part of the foundation of the statue. The statue was a gift from the people of France and was a joint effort between France and the U.S. France supplied the figure of Lady Liberty and the U.S. supplied the foundation. Bedloe's Island was later renamed Liberty Island which is it's name today.
The Statue of Liberty was officially started to be built on September 24, 1882. Thank you for using answers.com today.
