Where is the Wicked Witch of the West?

According to the original 1900 book edition, and the beloved 1939 film version, of 'The Wizard of Oz', the Wicked Witch of the West melts into nothingness. According to the much later book 'Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West', the Witch melts, but perhaps not into nothingless. For there's the provision, and the fear, in the end that she will come back. In the musical 'Wicked', which is based on the book, the Witch fakes her death by escaping through a trapdoor. She leaves the lands of Oz for some unspecified location beyond and outside its borders, for a new life of happiness with her love interest, Prince Fiyero.

The Wicked Witch of the West is nameless in both the original 1900 book edition of "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz" by author Lyman Frank Baum (May 15, 1856 - May 6, 1919) and the beloved 1939 film version of "The Wizard of Oz."

Specifically, author Gregory Maguire (b. June 9, 1954) converts Baum's initials of "LFB" into "El-pha-ba" Thropp as the Witch's name. Maguire also honors Margaret Hamilton (December 9, 1902 - May 16, 1985), who plays the Witch in the 1939 movie, by channeling the actress's love for animals into Elphaba's concern over animal well being in Oz.

The Wicked Witch of the West begins life as Elphaba Thropp in the Munchkin village of Rush Margins. She spends some time as a Shiz University student in the Emerald City of Oz. She falls in love with Fiyero, a Vinkus/Winkie prince of Kiamo Ko.

No information is given in either the original 1900 book edition nor the beloved 1939 film version of 'The Wizard of Oz'. But details are forthcoming in the much later novel 'Wicked', by Gregory Maguire [b. June 9, 1954]. For Maguire explains that the Wicked Witches of the East and West are sisters, and descendants of the prominent Eminent Thropp of Munchkinland. And so both are born in the Blue Munchkin Country of the East. But Nessarose Thropp, as the favorite daughter of her father Frexspar, rules in the East until she is killed by Dorothy Gale's farmhouse landing on top of her. And the elder, but less favored Elphaba becomes the Wicked Witch of the West.
