The first dirigible balloon flew in 1852. Frenchman Jules Henri Giffard made the first powered and controlled flight (with passengers) 24 September 1852. He flew 27 miles from Paris to Trappe. He made a round trip because the winds were too strong for his airship to land.

The dirgible was powered by a 2,200 watts (3 horsepower) steam engine.
