Laszlo Biro, a Hungarian, is credited with inventing the modern ball point pen. He patented it in 1938 in London. There were some similar inventions prior to it, going back to 1888, when a John J. Loud patented one. It was not commercially successful. Galileo is also said to have created a form of ballpoint pen in the 17th century.
