It came on ships that had rats with fleas from Asia. Asia was the first place to experience the plague and it came through Italy from ships at ports. The world in this time was a dirty place so rats and fleas were everywhere. People didn't take baths or wash clothing so they came into contact with the fleas that carried the plague.
The first time the Bubonic Plague struck was in the 6th century, and took place in the Byzantine Empire. The Bubonic Plague took the lives of around 50 million people in the Roman Empire alone.

Well, sweating didn't actually kill the plague in the first place , the fire killed the fleas which held the virus (most of them anyway) and although there was some more breakouts it was stable. :) hope that helped
