In 1789 New York City became the nation's first capital. Then in 1790 the capital was relocated to Pennsylvania where it remained for ten years. Once again in 1800 the capital was move to its current location in Washington D.C.
Savannah was Georgia's first capital. However, by the mid-1850s many people were pushing to move the state capital to a more centrally located area. Mobile and Atlanta were both battling for the honor until the military governors in control of Georgia after the Civil War ordered Atlanta to become the capital.
