More than one historian has suggested that after the American Revolutionary War, the port of New York was the preferred one for the imports of British goods. For the British, Boston and Philadelphia was a sore point because of they were centers of revolutionary activities before and during the American war for independence. New York, on the other hand had been occupied by the British for a good part of the war. There, revolutionary activity was kept under check.
On October 19, 1781, British General Charles Cornwallis surrendered his army of some 8,000 men to General George Washington at Yorktown, giving up any chance of winning the Revolutionary War. Cornwallis had marched his army into the Virginia port town earlier that summer expecting to meet British ships sent from New York. The ships never arrived.

Because of the so-called Boston tea party, where as Indians dressed Americans climbed aboard a ship and threw the cargo (tea) off the ship in protest against the taxes they had to pay to England.

British Troops were in Boston because it was a major sea port and after the 7 Years war, (French and Indian War) it was a major strategic port that allowed for control of the Northeast and support to Canada and the removal of former French citizens to New Orleans.
