More than one historian has suggested that after the American Revolutionary War, the port of New York was the preferred one for the imports of British goods. For the British, Boston and Philadelphia was a sore point because of they were centers of revolutionary activities before and during the American war for independence. New York, on the other hand had been occupied by the British for a good part of the war. There, revolutionary activity was kept under check.
The first major target in the South for the British during the Revolutionary War was Charleston, South Carolina. Capturing Charleston was strategic for the British as it was a key port city and a center of trade and loyalty in the South. The British aimed to gain control over the southern colonies and exploit Loyalist support, believing that they could rally more loyalists to their cause in this region. The successful siege of Charleston in 1780 marked a significant early victory for the British in the Southern campaign.
On October 19, 1781, British General Charles Cornwallis surrendered his army of some 8,000 men to General George Washington at Yorktown, giving up any chance of winning the Revolutionary War. Cornwallis had marched his army into the Virginia port town earlier that summer expecting to meet British ships sent from New York. The ships never arrived.
