I was stationed to an Air Defense Unit that was north of Uijongbu. tHE Camp was called Camp Irwin. the village was called BEOBWEON-RI. Was pronounced PAW-WA-KNEE. The years I was there was 1979-80. The camp was built of sheet metal quonset huts. The men there told me that the camp was an old M.A.S.H. unit during the Korean War. It was located approx. 20 miles from the DMZ. If you slowly turned around you could imagine helicopters coming in over the nearby mountains. The camp had 2 heli-pads, and like the tv show 1 was up a small hill overlooking the camp. M.A.S.H. units moved around a bit so our location may have been 1 of them. The Army camp got a nickname from the villagers...BEGGERS COMPOUND. That was due when the supplies ran out from being cut off, the soldiers at the camp had to ask/beg for food from the village when the Army couldn't get supplies thru.
