Long before there was a Walmart, there was a Walton's 5 &10. It was opened by founder Sam Walton in 1950 in Bentonville, Arkansas. This five-and-dime store (so named because many items in the store cost as little as a nickel or ten cents) was very successful, and this game Sam Walton the idea of opening a different kind of department store. He did so in Rogers, Arkansas in 1962, and that was the first Walmart.

∙ 16y agoThe Five and Dime. Sam Walton named a store Walton Five and Dime which was typically called the Walton 5 &10. Originally after leaving JCPenny he had purchased a Ben Franklin store which was a franchise of the Butler Brothers chain. He also leased an old Kroger and opened a store on this site called Eagle which was closed due to non-renewal of the lease. (Both of these ventures helped him gain the experience needed to open Wal-Mart. The first actual Wal-mart was opened in 1962 in Bentonville, AK.
