Shortly after this division, the North attacked the South with the goal of unifying all of Korea under communist rule. President Truman was convinced that Stalin had initiated this attack. Later, history showed that Stalin had supported the attack with advisors, but it was at the insistence of the North Koreans. In fact, a civil war had been brewing for several years in Korea. Some historians estimate that as many as 100,000 Koreans were killed in this civil war before the North invaded the South.
