Long houses are such an obvious invention that they have been used all over the Place. Vikings, Native Americans and Amazon indians have all used them.

Before contact with Europeans all native Americans in North, Central and South America were effectively Neolithic (New Stone Age) cultures. This means that they made the best use of natural resources and materials in their particular area, whether that was mud-brick, grass lodges, earth lodges, shelters of brushwood, plank houses or bark-covered timber longhouses.
In the eastern woodlands are of what is now the USA, the major resource was trees and the natives used various parts of different trees for constructing canoes, dwellings and containers. Building a longhouse in the middle of the Plains would have been impossible, since there were no suitable trees, but in the woodlands it was the obvious building material.
