In the U.S. they were originally built at Los Alamos, NM. When the production rates became too high for Los Alamos (and when the Livermore, CA lab began making successful designs) a plant was built at Rocky Flats, CO to build them. It is shut down now because of too much Plutonium contamination and lack of need for new weapons.
