When John White returned to the colony in 1590, after three years away, he found no sign of anyone, except the letters CRO and CROATOAN, carved on a tree. He never found his daughter and her husband.

The "Lost Colony" was the Roanoke Island colony, which was founded by John White. He left, and sailed to England, and when he came back, the people had disappeared. There was a name carved into a tree,"Croatan", the name of a tribe nearby. No one has ever been able to decide what happened to them.
