Delphi was the Oracle of Apollo. It was there that mortals went to seek answers to their future. A young priestess sat on a tripod, inhaling fumes from the crevice that she sat by, and priests told the seeker what she had said. It was usually ambiguous, and the seeker had to figure out the meaning of it.
The Greek God Apollo would say many different things, if he were a human. He gives advice to people in need through high priestesses who usually responded in a riddle, hard to decipher. The high priestesses would take drugs that would seemingly make them go into a trance, thus communicating with Apollo. Apollo also speaks through dreams and 'visions', which were vivid and highly detailed. These visions and riddles are deciphered by the high priests.

well... kinda, but i think you are getting mythology mixed up with history. Apollo had lots of oracles, at every temple there were priests who would scry though various means. sometimes they would look at the flights of birds, or at the bumps and lines in a sheep's liver. the most famous of Apollo's oracles was at Delphi. here the oracle, called a Pythian, was always a woman. the Pythian, sitting on a tripod brazier in a cave beneath the temple, would receive the god Apollo inside herself and speak prophecy. this prophecy would be written down by the attending priests and later written in a poem. the prophecies were always vague and shrouded in riddle, but it was a bad omen for a head of state to not consult the oracle before some major event.
